Frequently
asked questions
What is happening on John Sims Parkway?
A 12.6 million transportation improvement
project is underway to widen the busy
thoroughfare to six lanes between a point
southwest of Government Avenue and a point east
of Bayshore Drive.
Why is the project being performed?
John Sims Parkway is one of the busiest highways
in Okaloosa County. It is estimated that 52,000
vehicles travel the parkway each day. Traffic
congestion is currently a major problem. This
project will increase traffic capacity, improve
traffic flow, and enhance driver and pedestrian
safety along John Sims Parkway.
How much will the project cost and who is paying
for it?
The construction cost for the John Sims Parkway
improvement project is $12.6 million. The
project is being funded by the Florida
Department of Transportation.
How long will it take to complete the project?
Work began in January 2006 and the project is
scheduled for completion in 2008.
Will there be any traffic impacts during
construction work?
A construction project of this magnitude and
complexity will sometimes impact traffic.
Drivers may encounter lane shifts, occasional
detours, and periodic lane restrictions during
the construction work. FDOT and its’
consultants will endeavor to limit traffic
impacts whenever possible. Refer to this web
site for the latest information on traffic
impacts.
What about access to businesses, residences, and
other private property?Access
to private property will be strictly maintained
during the construction work.
Why does John Sims Parkway eastbound traffic now
have to stop at the traffic signal at the SR 85
intersection?
An August 2007 traffic shift put eastbound
traffic on the former westbound lanes. The
traffic shift removed the guarded lane that
allowed SR 85 southbound drivers to turn left
onto John Sims Parkway eastbound. Without the
guarded lane eastbound traffic must stop to
allow drivers to turn left from SR 85 southbound
to John Sims Parkway eastbound.
Who is responsible for performing the work?
The construction project is administered by the
Florida Department of Transportation, District
Three. Volkert Construction Services, Inc. is
providing construction engineering and
inspection service in support of FDOT. The
construction contractor is APAC-Southeast.
